SUGAR Box in Blue Paint
Northeast, ca. 1820-1840.
Possibly poplar, with original, very dry soft blue- to blue-gray paint, depending on lighting, stenciled “SUGAR” in black within a serrated border. Very thick walled, the lid hand-planed. High-character complex surface with period wear as shown. Good condition, with small tabs on each side that suggest it may have had a handle (long gone).
About 11 ¾ inches diameter x 7 tall. Labeled boxes are very difficult to find as they are actively collected. This SUGAR box is for the collector who loves "surface".
