Theorem Miniature
Watercolor on paper, with pinprick embellishment, retaining bright colors. Initialed ‘EH’ and dated 1851.
This technique was practiced throughout New England, Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic, so difficult to confidently assign a region without more research.
Theorems in this period were often expressions of abundance and optimism. One can imagine this little gem being given to EH as a daily inspiring personal keepsake. The stylized handles of the pot remind me of a favorite coffee cup.
In a terrific period molded black painted frame, that is likely original, each side fitted with glass. The back has a pencil inscription “Bought from the KIMERLINE FAMILY, Oct. 29, 1951, ironically one hundred years after the folk art was created.
Untouched condition with toning. Frame size about 5 1/4 inches x 4 3/8.
